What is Steampunk, a definition

When discussing steampunk the definition can be vast but all definitions always include the element of steam and the victorian era.

Because of the popularity of steampunk with people in the goth, punk, cyber, and Industrial subcultures, there is a growing movement towards establishing steampunk or "Steam" as a culture and lifestyle. Many are attempting to adopt a "steampunk" aesthetic through fashion, home decor and even music.

My grandmother had the most wonderful wooden case radio similar to this one that we used to listen to in the evenings instead of watching television. We would listen to music and dance.

Steampunk was influenced by, and often adopts the style of the scientific romances of the 19th century, by Jules Verne, H.G. Wells, Mark Twain and Mary Shelley.

"Steampunk" fashion has no set guidelines, but tends to synthesize punk, goth and rivet styles as filtered through the Victorian era. This may include mohawks and extensive piercings with corsets and tattered petticoats, Victorian suits with goggles and boots with large soles and buckles or straps, and the lolita fashion and aristocrat styles. Some of what defines steampunk fashion has come from cyberpunk, and cyberlocks are used by some people adopting a steampunk look.

Steampunk is not dark and spooky, it elegant and beautiful. If steampunk has a mission, it is, in part, to restore a sense of wonder to a technology-jaded world.

Doesn't Hugh Jackman make it look oh so good?
